By Jodi Leese Glusco, WRAL.com director of content — The driver of a concrete truck that sparked a chain-reaction crash Friday afternoon on Interstate 40 faces charges of misdemeanor death by vehicle and failure to reduce speed. According to Raleigh police, Giovanni Bilotta, 33, of 4304 Waterford Valley Drive in Durham, was driving under the posted speed limit on I-40 near Lake Wheeler Road when he tried to merge left into a lane where traffic was stopped. Bilotta's truck first hit a 2000 Ford Escape driven by Austin Dale Webster, 27. The chain reaction pushed Webster's vehicle forward, and four other vehicles were damaged.
Two others – Julisa Brown, 25, who was driving a 2006 Chevy Trailblazer and Nereida Tapia-Guzman, 18, who was driving a 2009 Honda CRV, were injured and were taken to WakeMed. Another two vehicles were involved in the crash, but their drivers were not injured. Police do not suspect that Bilotta was under the influence at the time of the crash. It's not clear what happened the way the article was written. Was Bilotti the concrete truck driver or the victim? The truck driver was charged with failure to reduce speed and the article talks about someone driving under the limit. Come on channel 5, you're better than this.
