Hercules Qxld5 Service Manual
Hey Everybody! So I've stumbled upon a Hercules QXD-3 power-unit. The framework is clearly factory made, but appears to have had some modifications. Front pulley has three big grooves (possibly primary PTO end?) while the rear has a big single-groove pulley on the outboard edge, and what looks to be either a really wide flat-belt sheave area.

Or a hoisting drum. The flywheel housing doesn't appear to have a clutch release mechanism of any type, so it may not have a clutch at all. Looks like a smaller SAE flange size. I'm HOPING that I'm a lucky man, and that it matches a 18kw generator head I have sitting in my barn. Electric starter, bracket for a generator, and front-end has a crank claw. Distributor ignition, intake and exhaust manifolds (both good) oriented for exhaust up, and updraft carb. Carb and governor are both missing.
It's got a reman tag on it, and I suspect by the 010 stamping, that it was rebuilt to.010' over at one time. Oil plug is out, there's no radiator or coolant, plug wires are all gone, but plugs are in place. Here's the big surprise. I put my foot atop the hoisting-drum area. Leaned to one side, and she TURNED!!! No compression. Probably has a half-dozen stuck valves;-) but I can fix that fast.
Looks like the QXD-3 was 3-7/16' bore X 4 1/8' stroke for 229.7 CI, and rated 65HP@2700 RPM. Appears to be common in some early Deere combines, and in smaller commercial trucks (Divco milktrucks, etc). Looks like there was another version in this family called the QXLD, where the 'L' identified it as 'long stroke'. I have a JXLD on my big Condec generator at home. I've seen notes that the 'D' signifies the engine revision (there were QXA, QXB, and QXCs apparently), and I'm not sure what the -3 signified. Anybody ever found a 'map' of the Herky model breakdowns.
What the significants of all the Q, X, M, Z, A, I engines were? It'd be nice to have an identification matrix where a I could look up the letter designation and sort all this alphabet soup out! Here's a START of a listing. I extracted it from some other parts cross references. Dunno how accurate, and it's missing lots of smaller engines, but it's a start anyway. Yes I think your Q engine is from a combine as well when you talk about the pulley set up.
Deere went to their own 6 cylinder some time in the mid 50's and the first model Deere 55 combines were in 27 if I remember correctly. Also yes there are exceptions to the models. The models IX engines have an IXK which is 3-1/8 inch and the only place I have seen those were in the Cletrac HG later Oliver HG crawler. There is also an IXF which has a 2-1/2 inch bore if I remember correcly.
They were also made in a 2 cylinder version and used in the early model L John Deere tractors Those are the NX models which were also available as power units. You also did not mention the GO & DD series which were made in 3 cylinder versions to start with plus there were some 'pancake' engines that were made as horizonal engines. They also made a 1404 engine for some Cat Fork lifts.

DK.you need to exercise a little caution about getting ensnared in compiling engine lists.it can become addictive. My scribbled Herc list is presently eight (8) narrow ruled notebook pages plus another 21/2 pgs for known (??) diesels. While I have a lot of variations listed and almost certainly some uncorrected duplications and typos (you learn as you go along) I hadn't worked my way thru all my parts catalog Herc listings, plus at least a half dozen catalogs acquired since my indexing ground to a halt, bogged down in Cont'l power units connections to Cont'l lines, so I assume it's far from complete, especially as to types not covered in my catalogs. My earliest catalog references are in a 1917 ring catalog: four 4cyls: 'C' 31/2 bore; 'C2' 33/4; 'M' 4' and 'M2' 41/4. I wouldn't doubt I've even got a few numbers from Herc of SF and Herc of Evansville if they used comparable IDs. (Sigh) I wish I had them in good enough shape to copy.

In present form they're a hand scribbled chicken-scratching mess of interspersed additions, question marks where two catalogs give differing b/s, question marks re possible/probable typos, etc, etc, ad nauseum. I've never gotten a scanner, or a printer, or a copier, partly out of self defense.as it is, I've got files of newspaper clippings upstairs I've winnowed twice and still have too many-if I had a copier/printer I'd be destitute from paper charges. I do hope to re-do these messed up ones and bring them up to date re my recently purchased catalogs-the Herc, Beaver-Leroi and Cont'l are the worst-but it'll probably be when colder inside weather comes.
I will keep this thread on the computer in case I'm still alive/cognizant then.
