Maybe so it wouldn't get lost during shipment? I really can't believe that you've owned the mower this long without removing the cover. Whenever I get a piece of equipment, new or used, I always go through it completely, just to make sure fluid levels are right, belts are tight enough, etc, before it's ever hitched to the tractor. Too many horror stories out there of people buying a new bush hog, putting it to use and finding that the store didn't fill the gear box until it locked up, etc.

I agree that everything should be right on new equipment when you buy it, but you're dealing with people and people mess up, intentionally or not, so I always do the 'trust but verify thing'. It wasn't that long after I had bought it that I discovered this. I had taken this cover off before, but apparently didn't flip it over to see the backside of it where the manual had been taped. There was other materials that came with the mower in plain sight, why not have the most important part with it?

Oct 2, 2016 - I'd like to get a used MX5 or 6, but prices of used bush hogs in my area are steep. I Saw a County Line 5' hog at Tractor Supply today for 999.00. This is less. That way I know I can get service and parts if needed.

If it had come untaped the first time I fired it up, it would have fallen right into the pulley mechanism, shredding it, most likely. I guess I should be thankful they didn't tape it under the mower deck. Other than that, it's been a great mower for the money, no complaints at all.
